Falmouth Fact File
Falmouth is the the deepest natural harbour in Western Europe and third deepest in the world.
Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir John Killigrew stayed at Falmouth's Arwenack Manor House in 1598. This promted Raleigh to recommend that the site be developed as a port.
Development of Falmouth Docks began in 1858 and in 1860 a foundation stone was laid by Viscount Falmouth.
The Cornish Railway arrived at Falmouth in 1863 bringing further prosperity to the area, especially in the form of tourism.
Falmouth's National Maritime Museum was opened in 2003.
