Truro Fact File
Truro is the only city in Cornwall as it has a cathedral, the building of which started in 1880.
The town has existed since the twelfth century, when a castle was built by Richard Lucy, Chief Justice of England during Henry II's reign. The castle no longer exists, however remains were excavated at the top of what is now Castle Street.
Truro was an important inland port by the fourteenth century and was one of five stannary towns in Cornwall where tin was assayed and stamped before being sold or exported.
Industries based at Truro during the seventeenth and eighteewnth centuries included an iron foundry, tin smelting, pottery, tanning and carpet and wool making.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the town flourished as tin prices increased. The town became known as the 'London of Cornwall'.
