Newquay Fact File
The area of Newquay has been inhabited since the Iron Age, when a fort and industrial centre was in place.
By the fifteenth century the village was called 'Towan Blystra'. 'Towan' means sand hill/dune in Cornish and 'Blystra' meaning blown. The natural curve of the headland around Newquay Harbour gives protection from bad weather.
Up to the early part of the twentieth century, Newquay was famous for pilchards. The town is now a popular Cornish tourist destination.
