Redruth Fact File
The name 'Redruth' owes its connection to the mining industry. It was said that the stream running through the area was coloured red from iron oxide from the mining activities. In Cornish 'rhys' means ford and 'ruth' means red.
Carn Brea, a granite tor, overlooks the town. It was the site of a Stone Age hillfort and a renovated castle. Today a 90 foot tall hexagonal granite obelisk stands on top of the tor, erected in 1836 in memory of mine owner Francis Bassett, Lord de Dunstaville.
The tower of the parish church dates to the late fifteenth century.
The emblem of Redruth is a lamb and flag. This was originally a mark used to stamp tin ingots produced by smelting works.
The early 19th century railway station at Redruth has recently been restored.
