Saltash Fact File
Saltash is known as 'The Gateway to Cornwall'.
The town probably grew up around the crossing point of the River Tamar. There has been ferry operating there for many years.
The name 'Saltash' means 'ash tree by the salt mill'.
Prince Albert opened the Royal Albert Bridge in Satash in 1859. The bridge was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Saltash is the location of the cottage of Mary Newman, the first wife of Sir Francis Drake, whom he nmarried in Saltash in 1569. The cottage reportedly dates to 1480.
