Until 1838 Launceston was the capital of Cornwall.
The town is located on a hill, shadowed by the ruins of an eleventh century Norman castle built by Robert de Mortain (half-brother of William I). The castle is thought to be the inspiration for Malory's 'Chateau Terrible' in 'Morte d' Arthur'. The Saxon name for the town was 'Dunheved'.
Launceston Steam Railway is is a popular 5 mile round trip from Launceston to Newmills.
