Helston is the most southerly town in the United Kingdom and was historically a tin producing and cattle market town.
The town name is derived from Cornish 'hen lis' meaning 'old court'. The 'ton' part of the name is a later addition and denotes a Saxon manor.
Each year the traditional 'Furry Dance' is held. This dance is thought to date back to the medieval period.
Henry Trengrouse is buried at St. Michael's Church in Helston. He was an engineer who was the pioneer of rocket-fired safety lines used by costguards and lifeboat teams.
The Trelowarren Estate at Mawgan, near Helston has been the home to the Vyvyan family since the fifteenth century. The family were members of Parliament, baronets and landowners.
